Willmott Dixon is a privately-owned contracting and interior fit-out group. Founded in 1852, they are family run and dedicated to leaving a positive legacy in our communities and environment

As part of the construction of a sports hub facility on behalf of Elmbridge Borough Council, Willmott Dixon instructed Dunton Environmental to carry out the enabling works, comprising land remediation and ground improvement.

The site was a former landfill with the ground conditions typical of landfill sites comprising of a mixture of soils, rubble and general waste. A total of 75,613 m3 of historic landfill material were excavated across six construction areas stockpiled and subsequently subject to physical processing aimed to remove unsuitable materials as required by the remediation strategy.

In all zones, following an initial preparation by smooth roller of the waste materials at the excavation base, a minimum of three sets of ten passes by the Rolling Dynamic Compaction (RDC) dynamic roller were completed in order to achieve desired compaction of remaining landfill material below the base of excavation. Lime and Cement stabilisation were used to improve the engineering properties of the soils and to reduce moisture content in order to aid compaction.

Dunton Environmental consider that the completed works have met the clients requirements to mitigate the risk of long term ground settlement, provided a remediated capping layer for protection of ground works and long term site users, and resulted in a suitable engineering solution with minimal offsite disposal to landfill.

“We have known the Dunton team for a number of years and I’ve personally worked with them on a few of these schemes. They are a good, clear and knowledgeable partner who have brought innovation and efficiency to our ground regeneration schemes, hopefully they will be able to provide you with the same benefits.”
