PROJECT

Slough Gasworks, Slough

Client: Elliott Group

Contract Value: £2.4 Million

Duration: 52 Weeks

Scope of Works:

DNAPL skimming extraction system, earthworks – c.20,000m3 including removal of substantial buried Gas works infrastructure.

The Elliott Group has a rich tradition in construction dating back to the 1920’s, with notable success and experience across a wide range of key construction sectors

The remediation project at the Slough Gas works site presented several unique challenges due to its operational status as a live gas works and historical contamination issues. Access to the site was essential around the clock, with both above and below ground medium and high-pressure gas mains requiring continuous vibration monitoring and a vigilant site team to ensure safety and compliance.

The presence of Dense Non-Aqueous Phase Liquid (DNAPL)perched on top of the London Clays, a remnant of the site’s historic uses, necessitated the implementation of a skimming extraction system to address environmental concerns effectively.

The project faced obstacles from substantial buried gas works infrastructure, which impeded remediation and development efforts. However, innovative solutions such as re-engineering materials in layers and recycling concrete on-site to produce WRAP Recycled 6F5 aggregates resulted in significant cost savings for the client while optimising infrastructure for future use.
